  18. <p>     In a decision that could throw a President's records into
  19. the courtroom for the first time since Watergate, U.S. District
  20. Court Judge Harold Greene ruled last week that Ronald Reagan
  21. must turn over portions of his private diaries to his onetime
  22. National Security Adviser John Poindexter. In Greene's view, 29
  23. of the handwritten entries could "contain information of
  24. significance" to Poindexter's defense in the Iran-contra trial.
  25. Greene, who has viewed transcripts of the journals, says they
  26. hold no bombshells that will refute the former Commander in
  27. Chief's claims that he niether "knew of nor authorized" a
  28. diversion of Iranian arms-sale profits to help Nicaraguan
  29. contra rebels. However, the judge allowed that at least one
  30. entry is "ambiguous."

  32. <p>     Reagan's lawyers are likely to resist turning over the
  33. diaries by citing the doctrine of "Executive privilege," which
  34. protects the Chief Executive's private communications.
  35. Curiousity abounds in the capital as to prescisely what the
  36. former President recorded each day. Said a former Administration
  37. official: "I recall occasions when I was in the White House when
  38. people seemed to be insinuating that 'diary' was an
  39. overstatement of what we were really talking about."
